Eminem: Inside the comeback
|
|
Will his revealing new album, 'Relapse,' put him on top again?
Eminem is running late: 1,200 fans are packed in front of an outdoor L.A. stage for the taping of the rapper's May 15 "Jimmy Kimmel Live" appearance, waiting for a set that should have started 45 minutes ago. It's Eminem's first major U.S. music performance after a mysterious 4-year absence from public view - or at least it's supposed to be. But hey, what's a few more minutes when fans have been waiting for this comeback for so long, wondering where the world's most famous rapper had disappeared to?
At last, Eminem bounds onto the stage, joined by his touring DJ, the Alchemist, and rapper (and longtime pal) Denaun Porter. The crowd chants along as he tears through a few tunes from his long-promised album, "Relapse" (which will hit stores four days later, on May 19). When Eminem finishes, they plead in vain for "one more song!"
They're not the only ones hungry for more. In the weeks leading up to its release, "Relapse" has been hailed by critics and fans - many of whom heard it when it leaked earlier this month - as a landmark in the 36-year-old rapper's career, a stunning return to form from the man who is arguably contemporary rap's most talented lyricist. Even the competition is impressed. "I think that the 'Insane' song is genius," Kanye West tells EW, referring to one of "Relapse's" most outrageous tracks. |

Eminem - The hottest ticket in town
|
|
Hundreds of Eminem fans lined up at Record Time in Roseville on Monday to score tickets for the rapper's free hometown concert/record release party tonight at the Sound Board in MotorCity Casino in Detroit.
Those who ended the day with a ticket in hand were ecstatic.
"This is a dream come true for me," said Joe Michaels, 20, of Livonia, who said he had been trying to win tickets to the concert through radio promotions for a week and a half. "I had pretty much given up hope and didn't think it was going to happen. I am so psyched for the show."
Not everyone was so lucky. |

Eminem: "I took cough syrup to get high"
|
|
Eminem has admitted he binged on cough syrup during his drug addiction.
He said he became so hooked on prescription medicines that he also overdosed on the heroin substitute methadone.
He inadvertently took a massive dose after being given a handful of tablets by a pal.
Eminem, 36, said: “My doctor told me those mysterious new pills were methadone.
“Had I known it was methadone, I probably wouldn’t have taken it. But, as bad as I was back then, I can’t even say 100 per cent for sure.
“My doctor told me the amount of methadone I’d taken was equivalent to shooting up four bags of heroin.
“Even when they told me I had almost died, it didn’t click.” |

Eminem takes on the Punisher
|
Eminem stars in a new Marvel comic just before the release of his new album. Eminem's rat-a-tat wordplay makes him arguably one of the most dangerous acts of all time on the mic, but how will he fare against the Punisher, Barracuda and -- gasp! -- the Parents Music Council? "Eminem/Punisher: Kill You" -- a multimedia special collector's edition Marvel comic -- features the rapper in all his glory. The first half of the comic comes with the June XXL magazine, on newsstands now, and the eight-page conclusion is available exclusively at Marvel free of charge. In the Detroit-set story, Eminem displays a craving for Lafayette coney dogs before he becomes preoccupied with his dangerous adventure. Click the whole story link for the comic! |

Relapse - Cover art
|
The album cover for Relapse illustrates a head shot of Eminem composed by a mosaic of thousands of pills. A sticker on the cover resembles a medical prescription, where the patient is Eminem himself while it lists Dr. Dre as the prescribing doctor. Gil Kaufman of MTV News described the cover as a reference to the rapper's struggle and addiction to prescription drugs, adding that it follows Eminem's habit of displaying personal issues in his art. |
